CEO orientation held for first year students

Parents, students, and investors recently got a crash course lesson about a new entrepreneurial program coming to Shelby County.

The CEO program, which started in Effingham and has spread across the state and beyond, will begin its first year in the fall. Students will create their own businesses and regularly meet with local business leaders. The class is funded completely by local donations.

At the orientation July 10, Shelbyville Superintendent Denise Bence, chairperson for the CEO board, challenged the students.

"This is a doing class," she said. "If you aren't failing a little bit, it might mean you're not pushing yourself enough. You guys have to show investors what a CEO class can do. You are our representatives."

Shelby County Economic Development Director Anna Kiley, who will serve as the class facilitator, talked about her collaborative role.

"I really see myself as a business partner to students," she said. "I am more excited than ever for this. I'm really grateful to be in this position as a facilitator."
