Last Friday, our students visited TownePlace Suites in O’Fallon and were welcomed with breakfast, coffee, and Allyson Otey’s contagious energy. From the moment they arrived, you could feel their excitement and curiosity about seeing how a hotel really operates.
Allyson, who serves as the hotel’s General Manager and as a mentor in our program, had even suggested they dress for Casual Friday when one of our students called to confirm the visit. When she saw the class in their comfy clothes, she laughed and said, “I LOVE the sweats!” It was a small moment, but it immediately set a warm and relaxed tone for the morning.
As one student reflected later, “It’s not often that you can walk into a hotel with no intention to stay and receive amazing hospitality.” That feeling stayed with them throughout the entire visit.
While serving breakfast and coffee, Allyson shared about her role as General Manager and her work overseeing several Marriott properties. Students were struck by her confidence, not just in what she said, but in who she is. One student wrote that she answered every question “as if she created the role herself,” and shared that they now strive to carry themselves with that same confidence.
During the tour, students were able to see nearly every part of the hotel. From the front desk to housekeeping, maintenance, and operations, they saw firsthand how much effort goes into maintaining such high standards. One student noted how everything was “perfectly clean and organized,” and how admirable that was, especially compared to other hotels they had experienced.
They also learned about brand standards, daily operations, and the responsibility of leading a property that ranks in the top 5 percent for occupancy and guest satisfaction. Beyond that, they saw what it looks like when leadership, professionalism, and kindness come together.
Allyson also shared her personal journey, from studying elementary education at Murray State to becoming a leader in her family’s hospitality business. She spoke honestly about balancing work, family, and leadership, and about the importance of creating a culture where employees feel valued and guests feel genuinely cared for.
What stood out most to our students was not just the business side of hospitality. It was the heart behind it.
They noticed how staff supported one another. They noticed how pride showed up in the smallest details. They noticed how guests were treated with respect and warmth. They saw that success is built through consistency, integrity, and genuine care for people.
A heartfelt thank you to Allyson Otey and the entire TownePlace Suites team for opening your doors, sharing your story, and making our students feel so welcome. Thank you to Donna Wood, Lebanon High School, for stepping in as my substitute, and to students Timothy James and Brenton Hunter for capturing the day so thoughtfully in their notes.
Experiences like this shape how our students see leadership and their own potential. They leave believing not only in what they can build, but in who they can become.
And sometimes, that inspiration begins with breakfast, confidence, kindness, and a joyful, “I LOVE the sweats!”
