We visited Cardwell Built, where we heard from owners John and Laura Cardwell about the journey behind their business.

John started the company at just 19 years old, grinding in the early years and constantly learning along the way. What began as a simple opportunity turned into something much bigger through years of pivoting, improving processes, and building the right team.

One theme that stood out: people matter. From field carpenters and project managers to designers and subcontractors, success comes from having the right people in the room and in the right roles.

John emphasized the importance of having a clear process and staying focused on the big picture, while Laura reminded us how powerful conversations can be. They also shared the reality of entrepreneurship; balancing work, family, and life, and the discipline it takes to do things the right way, even when shortcuts exist.

Students wrapped up the visit with a hands-on construction estimating challenge, calculating materials and costs for a new build.

🏆 Winners: Michael Myers, Teagan Dalton, and Caden Kerns.
